Donation to Wheel Potential

We were delighted to hand over a cheque to local Community Interest Company (CIC) Wheel Potential at our lunchtime meeting today.

Wheel Potential is a local CIC that gives less able adults in the Canterbury district the ability to enjoy open-air cycling, often using specially adapted cycling machines.

Earlier this year our Community Services Committee agreed to support their work and today a cheque for £460.80 was handed over by our President Margaret Griffin to Beatrice Shire, one of Wheel Potential’s directors. Beatrice was delighted with the donation and told us how the money would be used.

In short, their 19 cycling machines (both 2- and 3-wheeled) are stored in two large containers when not in use, but are susceptible to the damp weather, especially in the winter months when frost can be a real problem. Our funds will be used to pay for a year’s supply of moisture-absorbing poles for the containers – these contain sacs of calcium chloride crystals that absorb the moisture from the air.

Wheel Potential serves 12 different groups with various problems, helping individuals to cycle along safe cycle routes and enjoy using cycles in a way that many of us take from granted.

We have asked Beatrice or her colleagues to give us a talk at a future meeting, and look forward to telling you more about their work then.
