The massive earthquake may longer be hitting the headlines here – but it’s effects are still being felt acutely by the people that have lost homes and businesses. As a result, some weeks ago our Rotary District (Rotary South East, 1120) paid for 2 x 40 ton lorries to take much needed aid to Turkey – the first shipped out from Herne Bay in an effort initiated by Maya’s Community Support Group CIC. Some District Rotarians flew out to help unload the lorry and described their “heartbreaking” experience.
When we received an email requesting each club in our District donate “just £100” for the Turkey support one of our members immediately offered a £100 donation that was matched by our Club – meaning that £200 will go towards efforts to fund more permanent homes. Further support from other Rotary clubs in other Districts across the UK will also support the project.
