Support for young people to volunteer in Uganda

Our Club is pleased to be supporting a group of young people in their travels to Uganda to volunteer for the Ugandan charity, JENGA Community Development Outreach, through the Rotary Club of Canterbury Millennium Scholarship Trust Fund (MSTF) and the International Committee of the Rotary Club.

MSTF was established as a separate charity by the Rotary Club of Canterbury at the end of the last millennium to provide grants to young people who live, work or study in the Canterbury City Council district and who have an interest in undertaking some charity work abroad with a recognised charity.

Earlier this year the MSTF Trustees were approached by a representative of the PCC of St Mary Bredin who were seeking support to help a number of young people travel to Uganda to volunteer with JENGA. The Ugandan charity works on many projects in the Ugandan city of Mbale working with vulnerable and needy children and community women’s groups, providing education and health programmes.

Four of the young people were interviewed by MSTF Trustees and a grant of £1,700 was awarded between them. One other applicant was not a UK national and therefore could not be considered by the MSTF. Instead, after considering the application, the Rotary Club, International Committee agreed to an award of £300 – making the total donation £2,000.
