Old Stagers’ 160th Season

On Saturday, 13th August, thirty three people (15 Rotarians, partners and family members) attended a performance of “Whodunnit”, a Comedy Thriller by Anthony Shaffer at the Gulbenkian Theatre, University of Kent at Canterbury.  This was performed by the Old Stagers, a company which claims to be the oldest surviving amateur dramatic society in the world, founded in 1842, which traditionally performs in Canterbury during the Canterbury Cricket Festival.

Nowadays their productions are often directed by professional actors or actresses and the emphasis is always on achieving the highest standards possible.   The Rotary Party was not disappointed.

A bonus for the Saturday performance was the addition of the Epilogue “The Director’s Cuts”, a short, but entertaining satirical review, written by Kate Robertson with music by Richard Ritchie OS.  The evening had begun with a Pre-Theatre main course eaten at the President’s home and concluded with desserts, cheeses, coffees and mints back there after the Show.  All members contributed to the fine repast and fellowship abounded in to the wee small hours!
