Members’ book club

One of the bonuses of Rotary membership is that you get to meet and become friends with a great mix of people and enjoy each others’ company in various activities. One of these is our members’ book club.

The book club was started by Rotarian Brian Dobinson in January 2011 and Brian has run it ever since. Members of the book club meet once every six weeks or so. They all read a chosen book and at the next meeting they discuss it, report on other books they have read and perhaps discuss other cultural activities they have taken part in or know are coming up. Usually the book club meets at the home of one of our Rotarians, where members have a glass of wine and some snacks and usually have “quite a jolly time”!

Brian kindly circulates notes of each meeting so that all of our Club members are in the loop. Brian muses, “Perhaps the most valuable part of the book club is that it gives members a very informal meeting place; we have certainly got to know each other much better thanks to the book club.”

Recent books for the book club include:

  • Inglorious Empire: What the British Did to India by Shashi Tharoor
  • Mort by Terry Pratchett
  • The Noise of Time  by Julian Barnes
  • The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Currently a dozen-or-so people attend the book club on a more-or-less regular basis – average attendance per meeting is about seven or eight, but there were 11 at the last meeting. Book club members include members of our Rotary Club, their spouses and others who have been Rotarians or whose spouses have been Rotarians in the past.
