A trip to the Kent Battle of Britain Museum

Our recent Rotary visit to the Kent Battle of Britain Museum in Hawkinge was a day filled with history, camaraderie, and shared passions. We were honoured to be joined by several guests including Sudipta Kundu, a Rotarian from Calcutta.

The Museum has a fascinating and extensive collection of artefacts – including real and replica aircraft such as the Spitfire and the Hawker Hurricane  – relating to the Second World War. There were also uniforms, cuttings and photographs that helped us appreciate what life was like for the brave airmen of that era.

Sudipta, who had been visiting Rotarians Roger and Irina in Canterbury, seized the opportunity to join our tour. His lifelong fascination with planes and World War II memorabilia made the visit especially meaningful for him. Walking through the museum, Sudipta expanded his extensive knowledge and enthusiasm, enriching his experience and insights.

The highlight of Sudipta’s visit was a special moment when our President, Maxine, presented him with a Rotary Club of Canterbury pennant  to commemorate his visit. This gesture symbolises the bond of Rotary fellowship that transcends borders. In return, Sudipta warmly invited any members visiting Calcutta to join him at his club, extending the hand of friendship and international cooperation.

Our visit to the Battle of Britain Museum not only deepened our appreciation for history but also reinforced the global connections that Rotary fosters. We look forward to many more such enriching experiences and to welcoming Sudipta and other international Rotarians in the future.
