Donation to St Nicholas School for DoE Gold Challenge

It was lovely to hear Stephen King, Deputy Headteacher of St Nicholas School Canterbury, teacher Matt Harris, and three of the school’s pupils talk on BBC Radio Kent about participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Challenge – which we’re helping to support!

We have a longstanding relationship with St Nicholas School, a local school for youngsters with special educational needs. (All of their pupils have profound, severe and/or complex needs). In the past, for example, we have helped the school take youngsters on outings such as one to see reindeer!

Our Community & Vocational Service Committee were pleased to be able to donate £900 to the school to go towards the cost of an expedition to Finland allowing five of their senior students to take part in the “Gold in the Cold” challenge – part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

It’s a big undertaking for the school, which is having to raise £11,000 to cover the costs. Our donation will be added to the funds raised by the school through fundraising activities (such as quiz nights and their Justgiving page) and donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals.

According to the school’s Justgiving page, “this is an opportunity for them [the participating students] to learn key life skills, including independent living away from home and teamwork, along with other more specific skills such as camping, map reading and hill walking.”

You can listen to the interview on BBC Sounds here.

If you wish to support the school through it’s Justgiving page, visit here.
