Our Club receives an award from the Royal British Legion

Our Club is very proud to have received a Community Award from the Royal British Legion for its work, over many years, for the Poppy Appeal.

Members of our Club have been providing voluntary collectors for the Canterbury Poppy Appeal since 1993. We are great admirers of the work carried out by the Royal British Legion (RBL), in particular their support for veterans and their families, and for this reason we’ve always been pleased to support the appeal.

Past President Viv Pritchard received the award, on behalf of the Club, from Richard Cast, the RBL Kent County Chairman, at a special ceremony at RBL’s Capel Morris Centre in Aylesford.

Speaking of the award, our President Neil Fraser said: “The Rotary Club of Canterbury is absolutely delighted to have received this award. The aims of the British Legion are fully supported by all members, as we feel strongly that it’s important to remember the service of the British Armed Forces in numerous conflicts and peacekeeping roles over the years.”

The Club was nominated by the Canterbury RBL President, Gerald Ferrett. In his commendation he states “They [The Rotary Club of Canterbury] turn out in numbers, whatever the weather, to collect on the streets of Canterbury during the two weeks in November each year. Last year they collected the magnificent amount of £3,018.00 which brought their total contributions to the Appeal to the incredible sum of £36,503.00. Their members are a vital element in the annual Poppy Appeal effort at Canterbury and we are extremely grateful for their loyal support. We strongly believe The Rotary Club of Canterbury deserve special recognition.”

It’s nice for our members to receive such a commendation. We will, of course, be supporting the Poppy Appeal again this November.
