Top Choir Kent 2010 Winner Announced
The all-women barbershop choir, Green Street Blues, from Sevenoaks, took the title of Top Choir Kent 2010 after a thrilling, hard-fought, final in front of a packed audience at Shirley Hall in Canterbury on Saturday 27th March.
The choir, made up of some 30 women singers under their musical director, Peter Kennedy, was the judges’ unanimous choice. The chairman of the judges, Dr David Flood, who is Master of Choristers at Canterbury Cathedral – along with his co-judges, conductor Nicholas Cleobury and Susan Wanless, head of music at the University of Kent – praised the energy of Green Street Blues, their enthusiasm and musical ability.
Green Street Blues were awarded the Brett Top Choir Kent Cup by Tim Brett and will now perform at this year’s Canterbury Festival as their prize.
The judges’ task was made all the more difficult because of the exceptionally high standard set by all the eight finalist choirs. Dr Flood said he and the other judges had the most unenviable job on the night and that all of them could have been given an award of some description.
The other finalists in this exciting competition were:
- Tunbridge Wells Baroque Singers – Adult mixed
- “Sedecim”, Kent College, Canterbury – 12-17 mixed
- City of Canterbury Chamber Choir – Adult mixed
- “Opus 32”, Sittingbourne – Adult mixed
- Royal Tunbridge Wells Orpheus Male Voice Choir – Male voice
- “Front Room”, Longfield – Adult mixed
- St Stephens Church Choir, Canterbury – All ages mixed
