Welcome from President Geoff Goodban

President Geoff Goodban 2013-2014

Canterbury Rotary Club came into being in 1922 and I am the 92nd President, with the record of also being the oldest President to take office.   I was born in the village of Herne in 1934 and I have lived and worked in this area all my life, with the exception of 2 years National Service in 1950’s where I served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

I am married to Tremaine and have a Son, a Daughter and two Step-Daughters.   I am a self-employed businessman working full time.   Canterbury Rotary Club is reputed to be the Premier Rotary Club of the whole District with 65 Members, and I have been a member of the Club since 2008.

On Saturday 13th July 2013 will be the first fundraising event of my Presidency, which is the Duck Race on the River Stour in the Westgate Gardens.   This
event has been run for several years by my predecessors and raises much needed money for local Charities.

Rotary is a worldwide organisation raising money for Charities both at home and abroad.  The Rotary Club of Canterbury is responsible for organising the Top Choir Kent competition each year, where we raise much money for Charity and at the same time give much pleasure, both to those attending and those participating in the function.

As well as raising money for charities you will see us every year in the streets of Canterbury raising awareness of conditions such as High Blood Pressure / Stroke Awareness and Prostate Cancer.  Wherever you see a collection for Rotary you can be assured that from every pound donated, every penny goes to charity.

It is important that we continue to look for younger members within the business and professional community.  It is a sad fact that some of our members, including myself, are approaching our sell-by date.

Being a Rotarian is something to be proud of, being the President is even greater.  Wherever you go in the world you will find Rotary clubs whose members have the same ideals as yourself, sharing fellowship and enjoying themselves while at the same time helping those less fortunate then ourselves.

Look for the Rotary Badge and give generously.

Regards, Geoff
