Rotary Fungus Walk

Thursday 22nd October 2015

Some 15 members, partners and guests took part in this walk in Blean Woods, which was led by Dr Joyce Pitts, a botanist of many years standing and Recorder of fungi for Kent, accompanied by one of her colleagues.

Agaricus campestris

Agaricus campestris – the common field mushroom

Dr Pitts explained the vital role played by fungi in recycling vitamins back into the soil, as well as breaking down leaf litter and all kinds of vegetable material, and the damage caused by agrochemicals which, by destroying fungus spores, resulted in vitamins simply being flushed into rivers, and hence the sea, where they cause pollution.

We then walked through parts of the woods and, in the birch areas, found 30-40 varieties of fungi, which were examined and explained.

A pub lunch at the Royal Oak at Blean completed a pleasant excursion.
