Rotary’s relief efforts in Moshchun

“What is Moshchun?”, you might well ask. It’s a village in Ukraine, much of which was destroyed last year as it became a battleground for Russian troops trying to advance to Kyiv. Rotary is helping to rebuild the village and help families made homeless.

Last year, Rotary Great Britain & Ireland’s Ukraine Crisis Taskforce set out to help raise a target of £3 million in order support the building of 300 temporary homes in the village of Moshchun; 85% of buildings there had been destroyed due to the conflict. The aim was to get new shelter in place before the first snow was predicted in October.

It’s been an amazing project with our Rotary District [District 1120; Rotary South East (UK) & Gibraltar] and Rotary clubs around the world supporting the recovery project.

While the money that we raised through joint fundraising efforts with our fellow Canterbury clubs for humanitarian relief for Ukraine went to support the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) humanitarian relief appeal for Ukraine, our Club also donated £500 of Club funds towards a collection from our District for this project back last summer.

Each modular mobile home costs around £10,000 and can provide accommodation for a family of four – up to 2 adults and 2 children.

Now that winter has set in, the need for heating has increased yet there is no power; as a result, the recovery project has also provided generators.

Our District Secretary, John Dunkley, has alerted us to a facebook page via which we can see what else is going on as part of Moshchun recovery. Interestingly, Ukranian Rotary clubs are also part of this effort. You can see a picture of the house that was built (no. 009) with help from our district and learn about the new occupants in the facebook post here.
