Our bookclub: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Here’s another quick piece about our bookclub – open to Members & spouses (& one or two guests). This is from the Zoom meeting held in March.

This month’s book: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

The setting: The book begins in the Gold Coast, West Africa, in the 1760s.

What’s it about: Published in 2016, this book covers the lives of various descendants of an Asante woman named Maame with a single narrative stretching over 200 years. It touches on a variety of issues such as slavery, colonialism and segregation. The book itself derived from academic studies by the author.

Thoughts from our bookclubbers:

  • “a clever book”
  • “some of it was hard to believe”
  • “might have been better as a series of short stories”
  • “very colourful in both a real and figurative way”

Our bookclubbers’ score: 7-9/10

Our bookclubbers’ other reads:

  • “Night School“ and “The Affair” – Lee Childs
  • “What does Jeremy Think?” – (non-fiction) Susan Hayward
  • “One Perfect Lie” – Lisa Scottline
  • “The Last Drop of Blood” – Graham Masterton
  • “I Know a Secret’ – Tess Gerriston
  • “Girl Woman Other” – Bernadine Eviston
  • “The Architect’s Apprentice” – Elif Shafak
