Awards for Children’s Christmas/winter-themed 2023 Writing Competition

We’re very pleased to have given out the prizes for our annual Primary School Writing Competition to  youngsters in the local schools that took part.

As in previous years, the children were asked to write an original story with a Christmas/winter theme, unaided and in their own handwriting. The judges look out for interesting and imaginative stories. Quality and range of expression, spelling, grammar and presentation are all taken into account (making due allowance for the age of the author).

Four local primary schools took part this year (Pilgrims’ Way, Blean, St Thomas’ and Kent College) and we had about seventy individual entries in total. The winners received book tokens to the value of £25 while the runners up received book tokens to the value of £15/£20. Some other youngsters were also awarded certificates. The judges were Mary McGeary, Jane Loughran and Alan Mepstead. We were very pleased to see that each school had at least one prize winner.

The competition, which is open to local schools in the area, was set up by our Vocational Committee in 2016. Through it, we hope that children from local primary schools will develop a love of writing and reading. Our aim is to help unleash writing talents and encourage and improve creativity.
