President's Marlow Weekend

On the weekend of April 13th -15th, a group of 18 Rotarians and partners set out to visit Marlow in Buckinghamshire.  We stayed at a very comfortable Country House hotel, the Compleat Angler, right on the south bank of the river.

The weekend had been orchestrated by Brian Dobinson, who had also arranged our evening suppers as well as a couple of easy walks on the Saturday and Sunday morning.

The first of the walks was a circular one, centred on the lovely village of Hambleden, and featured a demonstration flypast by a kestrel, and by a red kite, together with a climb up into the beech woods where there was a haze of bluebells. This was followed by lunch at the charismatic Plant Pot at Aston, some then going to the Stanley Spencer gallery at Cookham, others to Hughenden to learn more about Disraeli, who married his much older wife for her money – but would have married her again for love.

On Sunday the walk was alongsided the river to Bourne End, where, due to a slight earlier navigational error by Brian, we arrived just in time to see the train back leaving!  But no matter, it was a lovely morning and, after a cup of coffee, there was another train.
