F1 in Schools update from QEGS

As well as massive healthcare impacts, the coronavirus pandemic has had many impacts on events around the world; one such event was the F1 in Schools National Finals which was due to be held this week.

F1 in Schools is an initiative to encourage youngsters in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and the current health crisis is certainly a reminder of how important these fields are.

Our Club has been helping to support a team (Team “Eclipse”) from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham in the competition – earlier we reported their success in the Regional Finals, where they got 1st prize overall. This year’s team are Benedict Eyo (Year 10; Design and Manufacturing Engineer); Javier Gladstone Contioso (Year 11; Team Principal and Design Engineer); Maisie Billings (Year 10; Graphic Designer); Evie Curd (Year 10; Graphic Designer); Jonty Feurtado (Year 10; Manufacturing Engineer and Graphic Designer) and Isaac Wright (Year 9; Marketing and Sponsorship Manager).

It’s quite something for young people to come to terms with what is happening in general; more so when their normal schooling and interactions have been severely disrupted. We checked in with the team to learn that they are still positive, communicating regularly online, and moving forward with their preparations. We gather the event will now be held virtually at the end of June / beginning of July.

The team kindly shared a picture from before the “lockdown” of them wearing their new T-shirts with the logos of supporters to date. We wish them well in their preparations.
