Invitation to ‘Inspiring Minds’

Recently our members were invited to ‘Inspiring Minds’, a local STEM event that showcased the achievements of young people who took part in the Inspiring Minds project and completed national Crest Awards.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; several members of our club are STEM Ambassadors, and our our Vocational Committee has supported STEM through activities such as our Innovation Competition. (Our Club also helped fund an F1 in Schools team – F1 in Schools being an initiative to ” help change the perceptions of science, technology, engineering and maths”.)

The Inspiring Minds project is open to youngsters aged 14-15 as part of a Kent and Medway Collaborative Outreach Programme of Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU). This year’s showcase event coincided with CCCU’s launch of new engineering courses.

Our club was represented by the Chair of our Vocational Committee (and STEM Ambassador), Mary McGeary, who told us that Inspiring Minds sessions are designed to empower young people with new ways to think about themselves, their school subjects and what they can do next in their careers. The activities inspire the ability to think across subjects, to ask good questions and make good use of previously learned knowledge, with sessions encouraging young people to work as part of a team.

Mary enjoyed hearing about different projects during the showcase event.
